The Survey work of Andrew Caplin of NYU and colleagues is very interesting. He has been looking at things like how to measure self-control and direct elicitation in the context of life-cycle consumption. In one of the papers above, he talks about the link between self-control and conscientiousness in terms of their effect on financial behaviour.
