Although from 2003, this editorial from the BMJ is worth reading for the succinct way it goes through some key intervention studies.

I've picked up on the idea about joining the army here. I read something over the weekend (but can't remember where) about how effective the military is stamping out delinquent behaviour in the United States. The suggestion (admittedly blue sky thinking) was to introduce more militaristic elements into American schools in disadvantaged areas. A scary prospect but perhaps a very practical one...
