ive just briefly tuned in to see the game and Milan have just put one past Liverpool. The Italian crowd are leaping up and down with delight. - any theories as to why football fans get so in to this?? not suggesting that football is any more or less meaningful than anything else but it is an interesting model for emotions in the "real world"

Probably becuase football fans see their teams as a natural extension of themselves. Criticism of a favourite team is reflected as criticism of the individual as well.
It's probably similar to the God debate, where religion can be considered not to be something simply practiced, but as fundamentally defining the individual.
Religion and sport do seem to have alot in common, just thinking how Rooney was "God" at Everton, there was the "hand of god" , the "sin bin" and the red card, slogans like "it's not a matter of life and death it's far more important", slightly tongue in cheek i'm sure but there's definitely something here, i.e. the rules, conventions and values of society are in a way played out in both domains.
What for those of us who see no attraction in either sport or religion?!
economics martin - economics!
