Joel Mokyr
is Robert Strotz Professor of Economics at Northwestern, and one of the
foremost economic historians of modern times.
His books include Industrialization in the Low Countries,
1795-1850 (1976); Why Ireland Starved: An Analytical
and Quantitative Study of Irish Poverty, 1800-1851 (1983); The Lever of
Riches: Technological Creativity and Economic Progress (1993); The Gifts
of Athena: Historical Origins of the Knowledge Economy (2002); and
The Enlightened Economy: An Economic History of Britain 1700-1850. He is also editor-in chief of The OUP
Encyclopedia of Economic History and editor of the ongoing Princeton The
Princeton Economic History of the Western World.
