The url address is fine but I dont think "Dublin Microeconomics Blog" is going to work as a title. Answers on a postcard as to what would be a better one. Current default option is "Dublin Micro and Behavioural Blog".
I think the "default" is long-winded and obscure: current one better. Alternatively take out location & think of something memorable "Decisions and markets" , "Choice and behaviour" , "The human potential blog"
Agree with Kevin, suggest something memorable like "Think micro", "Micrologic", "Microsphere", or more straight forward "Microeconomics & behaviour" or "Micro-behaviour".
After seeing the late Denis Conniffe's superb lecture at the IEA a couple of years back, I got more interested in Edgeworth and more appreciative of the role he played in forming modern economics. Also, the appreciation he had for psychological aspects of micro-behaviour. It's a good suggestion Ronan.
We couldn't use it (at least without seriously generous permission) but Jon Elster's masterpiece "Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences" is closest in my head to what the topic matter of this blog is.
If you want to use Craggy Island you can always ask Graham Linehan for permission. He engages quite, well, engagingly, on twitter (@Glinner).
However, I suspect most of the likely audience of the blog will not know what on earth you are on about.
I guess one reason it's tricky is because the stated subject matter of the blog doesn't give it a clear identity. Behavioural econ, general micro, and a sort-of-but-not-really focus on Ireland...hard to know what people would be visiting for.
The previous institutional affiliation at least gave a rationale for the diversity of topics. There was a clear mental marker for the site as "the Geary blog" (once I figured out what the Geary Institute was). You might need to create an identity as a "team of writers" to make the diverse topics work - as the Freakonomics guys have done.
Maybe Craggy Island isn't so bad after all - a brand has to start somewhere. Or Smithwickonomics.
Definitely thinking about Edgeworth Box as a name for the blog. Also, partly take Leigh's suggestion and removed the reference to Irish policy in the description though for now the main posters are likely to be people who tend to work on applications in Dublin so the focus may drift toward that on occasion.

ReplyDeleteAlternatively take out location & think of something memorable "Decisions and markets" , "Choice and behaviour" , "The human potential blog"
You should name it such that its not exclusively micro. That way I can play more often.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Kevin, suggest something memorable like "Think micro", "Micrologic", "Microsphere", or more straight forward "Microeconomics & behaviour" or "Micro-behaviour".
ReplyDeleteI don't think it should necessarily be restricted by URL, either. Pick a good name and it's not a big deal to buy a domain.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michael that it should be something catchy. Kevin and Liam: maybe ask your students and give the best suggestion a choc-ice.
Enda, we would have get Ethics approval for the choc-ice (& didn't your parents ever tell you about taking sweets from...).
ReplyDeleteI think the first ever one we thought of was Craggy Island Economics blog but that might have hit copyright issues.
ReplyDeleteGood point Rob about the micro/macro distinction.
Ok, so the consensus so far is to think of something memorable. I had thought of something really memorable yesterday but ....(you get the picture)
How about Dub-onomics?
ReplyDeleteWhat about "Edgeworth's Box", given his Dublin and micro connections?
ReplyDeleteAfter all, if the Irish Times can have opinion columns called Drapier and Cantillon...

ReplyDeleteI think there's a certain weariness with the "onomics" meme at this stage Rob.

Just joking about the Father Ted thing Leigh!
ReplyDelete"Infra-marginal revolution"?

ReplyDeleteI've got it!
ReplyDeleteFirst, you need to change the focus to Wales instead of Ireland.
Then the answer becomes obvious:
Leekonomics!
