Nice short piece on how to exert self-control in the Guardian - I like the Pomodoro Technique, which will be getting a trial run in my office tomorrow.
Let me suggest a more useful direction for your research efforts. Go to the closes unemployment office and test Larry Summer's (et al) theory that people are unemployed because they don't want to work. Then test Stiglit's theory that people are unemployed because they are incompetent.
If you want an actual context for this research, see our new book at www.scribd.com/doc/16864582/The-Great-Recession-Conspiracy. The world needs less economic theory and more reality.
I am using a chess clock. Anyone who plays chess will know the intense urgency that results when your flag is about to fall. Highly recommend this to proctrasinating chess players working in fields with deadlines!
Ran through five 25 minute 'pomodoro' sessions.. not too surprising that it increases the salience of time...and raises both productivity and heart rate!!
