Three academics discussing whether academic research is of value to the taxpayer. Hmmm, I wonder what the answer will be?

I guess its like those discussions you hear on radio with a journalist interviewing another journalist about the importance of journalism.
Anyway Gerard everything that you do is of value to the taxpayer (& the world) what would there be to discuss?!
Gerard, Declan Jordan is very sceptical about the value of the type of academic research that is funded under government programmes. I couldn't make it to the debate but I reckon it would have been a good one, better than events where only people fully in agreement with large scale basic science funding are invited to essentially lobby.
