Every day is Saturday

Related to Gerard O'Neill's previous post about Sunday being the happiest day of the week, Cafe Hayek reports that Saturday is the day of the week Gallup has found that consumers spend the most. Based on the latest psychological findings Barack Obama has decided that all days should now be called Saturday, according to the report.

Funnily enough, I was at a PhD defence today in Paris. One of the results that the examiner was surpised about was that Sunday, apparently, was the least happy day of the week. Could it be because its the day before Monday? If you know what I mean.

i would have guessed Saturday but i certainly would have thought Sunday would be up in top three at least. I cant believe least happy. Most happy is plausible and what Gerard found in his work but least happy must be an artefact of some kind. Maybe a regression with a lot of controls?

Yes, maybe if you have controls for all the fun stuff you do at weekends then you might get that perverse result. Careful with that covariate, Eugene.

Misery as indexed by the percentage of time when negative emotions outweight positive in a large sample are (Krueger et al., 2009):

Monday 21.7%
Tuesday 19.0
Wednesday 20.9
Thursday 20.1
Friday 16.8
Saturday 17.7
Sunday 13.7

It's amazing that saturday is worse than friday, anticipation of the pleasure of shopping outweighs actual shopping?!
