From a quick read,it seems with a back-pack one perceives distances / slopes to be longer/steeper respectively but the real issue surely is which is more accurate? From one of the links it seems that the with back-pack figure is more accurate. One wonders how it varies with fatigue?
Last I heard, they were fiddling with various experimental designs to manipulate fatigue via exercise (running in place or a stationary bike). The biggest problem has been trying to figure out how to separate fatigue and arousal, since they have the potential to cancel each other out when we have participants exercise.
