Children who 'talk posh' do better at school

The findings emerged across a wide range of language tasks for all age groups and both genders in urban and rural schools.

Those in the centre for Human Development and Public Policy might find this story interesting.

Its not what you say but the way that you say it???

it was interesting listening to a debate on this on the radio yesterday. John Waters was arguing that they couldnt prove causality. They'd have to randomly make some of the posh kids talk "unposh" and vice versa and then see what happens.

"The "literate" language style - characterised by children in disadvantaged settings as "talking posh" - is critical for the development of literacy skills". Ah here! The independent reports the results of the next study: The "abstract" thought style- characterised by children in disadvantaged settings as "being a nerd" - is critical for the development of proficient thinking skills. Surely exposure to a far larger and more sophisticated vocabulary for about four years prior to entering school has to be a small factor. Speech and drama could be in for a comeback, now everybody after me- "The life of the wife was ended by the knife"!
