Denis Conniffe RIP

Denis Conniffe, a member of the UCD School of Economics (& previously at NUIM and the ESRI) passed away yesterday. Denis made many contributions to statistics, econometrics and applied economics. He was, above all, an exceptionally nice guy.

The best story I ever heard Denis tell was about Roy Geary's later-life preference for smaller journals with a quicker turn-around time. Denis informed me that Geary withdrew an article from a big journal and wrote to the editor: "I have no preference for posthumous publishing." Of course, Denis told this tale with much more interesting detail, and greater wit. We were discussing at the time how the method of instrumental variables estimation can be accredited to Geary.

More tributes to Denis, including praise for his fine talk on Edgeworth (at the IEA conference in Cork 2009) are here on the Irish Economy blog:

Arrangements for Monday morning are also outlined.
